Bryan knew he was doomed when he saw the smile on his stepbrother's face. Van always wore this particular, invincible sneer when Bryan was about to be punished, and he was wearing it now as he walked with his dad into the room.
Vance Senior and Vance Junior or 'Van' had performed a quick stock check in the back room and it appeared that the family store was missing some merchandise tonight.
"This isn't fair!" Bryan said to his stepdad. "Van was supposed to help me run the store today and he disappeared with his friends. I had to do everything myself help customers try on shoes, work the register and watch out for shoplifters. How is it my fault if a couple of pairs got snatched when I wasn't looking?"
