Every traveller is warned about the perils of sitting at the back on the night bus - legend has it that you won't sleep as the chairs don't recline and the air con is more prone to dripping here, along with several other stories that may or may not be true. I decided to risk it for the 12 hour bus ride to Bangkok rather than sit next to somebody else; with a whole row to myself I'd be able to lie down fully. That was the thought process and execution, until somebody else that didn't like their lot of the draw decided to join me - it wouldn't hurt me too much to share the space with him as I had monopoly on three of the five seats anyway.
My guest was a slightly unshaven, dark haired, brown eyed man in his middle twenties, Dutch I'd venture but without fitting the supertall stereotype I'd grown accustomed to on my travels aroun Thailand. He smiled at me briefly before starting to read a book intently. I didn't mind him not being the usual uber-social traveller - I had a lot of sleep to catch up on before our 6am arrival time. I started yawning within the first hour and dozing within the second. I kept stealing occasional glances at my neighbour but soon curled up (as the bus was chilly) and was sleeping before long.
