The Troll and the Lumberjack

One fine summer's day, a strapping lumberjack discovered the home of a tree troll in the hollowed section of a fallen tree. Being a practical man who didn't believe in trolls, he took the stranger to be a dwarf, and didn’t take kindly to the small man trespassing on his property. The two stood toe-toe and studied each other for a moment. The troll was short, broad, and bearded, and the lumberjack was towering by comparison, more than double the height of his new acquaintance. The big man swelled his keg of a chest and thumbed the sides of his work belt as he stared down at the diminutive stranger. The troll flinched not a bit at the size of the man standing over him. "You and your kind have disrupted my ancient home, and you'll pay dearly for your impertinence!"

The lumberjack narrowed his gaze like a bull. "Tis you who will pay; this land has belonged to my kin for centuries, and you are a squatter on it!"

"The ancient ones have owned this land far longer than you and yours!”
