The first thing which observers at Ellis Island noted was just how immense, how mind-splittingly HUGE Graham was, particularly in comparison with the Statue of Liberty standing in the middle of the New York Harbor nearby. It was clear that he would dwarf the iconic monument, even though he was still a couple miles away. In turn, the first thing Graham noticed was how tiny Lady Liberty was. That cant be it, he marveled. Its so fucking SMALL! But he grinned from ear to ear when he reminded himself that it was not that statute that was small, but rather he who was so astoundingly BIG.
Many tourists had concluded that the bay and the rivers would be the safest place to view Graham. There would be no danger of toppling buildings on the water. The President had assured everyone that with the exception of a few isolated areas, the City would be safe, but people did not believe him. Nevertheless, Grahams departure from his chartered route led him into the bay. Though he noticeably slowed his pace as he stepped into the harbor, the displaced water from his steps caused tremendous waves to ripple across the bay, sending ferries teetering and nearly tipping over. Dozens of private craft were not so lucky, and were quickly overwhelmed, tipping over from the waves and capsizing. More than a few people drowned. As one author was fondly noted, so it goes.
