I woke up with a start.
There was that noise again. The sound of feet, shuffling, dragging across the ground, below my window.
I shivered. I was cold. It was October. The time of year when the temperature takes a dip. When it's nice to fall asleep with the windows open, let the fresh air in, but there's the risk of waking up frigid in the middle of the night.
I looked over at Rick. His long, taut frame, tangled in the covers, was just barely visible in the low light. I was tempted to trace my fingers across his stomach. He looked so... vulnerable. His height probably made him look skinnier than he actually was, even though he was only an inch or two taller than me. And yet... I just wanted to hold him. Protect him.
