So hows Tyler? Duncan asks, breaking the silence.
I stiffen up in my seat. Duncan sits across from me at the table, slouching in his chair. He had placed a beer in front of me before sitting down and stretching out his long legs. I sit clutching my beer tightly, legs tucked under my chair. Oh, hes fine, just, uh um I trail off.
The hanging ceiling lamp is the only lighting in the kitchen, creating a glowing perimeter isolating us from the darkness of the rest of the room. The only sounds come from the TV in the living room and the crickets outside. Duncan finishes his beer and slams it down on the table. He stands up and walks to the refrigerator to get himself another. As he walks back, he points to my lap and asks, "What's that?"
I twitch again and the frame in my lap slides off my legs and clatters on the ground. I scramble to pick it up, mumbling, "Oh this?" I place the picture on the table and explain, "Just a present for Tyler. For uh, graduating."
