The Dwindling Life of Gary

It was a normal Friday night for Gary—or at least it started out that way. He was riding his bike home from his best friend’s house. It was the start of his summer vacation and Butch had invited him over for to have dinner with his family. The street lights had been on for a couple of hours and he would make it home just in time for his curfew. It was a bit of a sad occasion for Gary. Butch, who was a senior had graduated high school would be leaving with his family in the morning to visit Texas A&M and meet with the coaching staff. They’d be gone for about a week then Biff would return home for a couple of days then head off again for football camp.

Gary was happy that his best friend since childhood had received the scholarship and Butch was a good student and had earned the chance. Bear Bryant had just accepted the head coaching position and it was sure to be good season. He felt angry at himself for being sad when he knew he should be happy for his friend. Butch was really his only close friend and with Gary starting his senior year at the local high school in the upcoming fall he would just miss having Butch around and that he was leaving tomorrow, on his eighteenth birthday just added to his misery, because that just left Thomas, Gary’s father, to spend his birthday with. A prospect he did not enjoy.
