I could have kicked myself. This had been my second blunder as a pet owner within 12 hours ...
It was the shock of my life when coming to in the morning, lazily stretching and rubbing my eyes before adjusting to the light, checking my watch that read nearly 11 pm, only gradually bringing my little recent acquisition back to my mind and finally bending over to cast a glance at the cage that rested on the floor at the end of the bed ... and finding it empty! The latch open, the cage deserted, the manikin vanished. At least I could restrain myself from commiting the third elementary mistake in the nick of time: I don't dare picturing the mess if I really just would have jumped out of bed on my first impulse and shit would have happened ... highly likely, the tiny one was somewhere down on that floor I had been about to stomp on, and nothing easier for a 200-pounds hunk of brawn to accidentally crush a one-ounce brownie underfoot whose physique actually didn't put up more resistance than the same-named pastry; whose skin didn't provide more surface tension than a customary tomatoe, whose skeleton wasn't even as resilient as an empty soda can. Man, I really had to learn to take care!
