There was more, but Kevin's dad had thrown a crumpled up breakfast sandwich wrapper his way. It gently collided with the side of his face and brought him out of his fantasy daze.
"Rest stop," his mom said, opening her passenger-side door.
"You'll have to put the people away if you want lunch," his little sister chirped. She always referred to books as "the people," referring to the characters within. As if they were real, somewhere and somehow. It was cute.
Kevin procured a bookmark from his pocket and slide it inside as he reluctantly closed the book. He sat up and swung his feet over the seat. He rubbed the strange grogginess from his eyes, and then got up to follow his family.
Halfway across the parking lot, he was gripped by sudden, inexplicable hunger pangs. His stomach protested so loudly that his mother turned and gave him a silly smile. He rubbed his flat abdomen in slow, uneasy circles. He hadn't realized how hungry he was until just then. It must have been that story, he mused to himself.
