(First macro story ever. Go me!)
Alex Cross wasn't like the other freshmen moving into the dorms this semester. Not by a long shot. Due to a rare genetic disorder, so rare in fact that it is called Alex Cross Disease, he was only one inch tall. His parents didn't want him to go. They fought him for months on it. They begged. They pleaded. They tried everything in the book to get him to change his mind, but in the end Alex won out. Thanks to a social media campaign he started from home, he managed to find a school that would not only pay his entire tuition, but also provide special amenities that would allow him to live as safely and normally as possible. His first layer of protection was a shoebox sized steel enclosure bolted to the floor of his dorm. It contained a bed, a bathroom, a kitchen, and everything else he would need to establish a daily routine. Next, the floor of his dorm room was made from a special shock absorbing material that felt solid, but could actually keep a grape from being squashed if stepped on by a 200lb man. Finally, his roommate who had been selected through an exhaustive screening process , would be taking every class with Alex, and ensuring his safety around campus.
It his first night in the dorm, and Alex sat on the miniature couch in his personal room watching a doll sized television. His parents had stuck around all afternoon hoping to meet his roommate, but when he hadn't shown up by six, they finally caved to their son's insistence that they leave. Alex was beginning to doze off when he heard the dorm room door unlock.
