Steve Holcomb was not quite the vision of an Olympic athlete. Yes, his arms and shoulder's were powerful. His legs were like steel. But he had that paunch, though firm and strong, still had people doubting his abilities.Steve, in Sochi, smiled as he remembered the naysayers he had encountered before the Vancouver Olympics. He himself wasn't sure he could do it. Yes, he had the strength, and his eye sight had been taken care of through surgery. But he still was lacking something to put him over the edge.Steve visited a mentor who told him he needed an outside reason to win. Steve left, wondering what that outside reason would be. He went back to the training center and saw his biggest fan. Mike worked at the front desk and always cheered Steve on. Mike was shorter and thinner. Steve could have broken him like a twig, but every time he thought of Mike and his awe of Steve, it made Steve want to work harder. That's when Steve realized that he longed for the admiration of smaller men. He enjoyed being bigger and stronger than other guys.
