Big Things Are Happening in Haad Rin, Part One

A 24 year-old Biology graduate of a Russell Group university, the world of work should have been full of possibilities and potential for me. Graduating at the height of the worst post-war recession had removed more opportunities than my degree could ever create. There was only so much of 'six months of this and ten months of that' a person could manage. I'd been living in that stage for almost three now. It was definitely time for a change. Europe was fiscally sick and had spawned a generation of disaffected young adults, who were unable to find challenging and fulfilling jobs and so had little choice but to go abroad to escape mediocrity. I was among them.

I started in Thailand en route to Australia and made sure my itinerary included one of the famous Full Moon Parties on Koh Phagnan. I checked into my hostel a day in advance and spent the time preceding the party becoming better acquainted with my dorm mates - who largely comprised of struggling graduates, natively optimistic students and gap-year toffs. I met so many sociable people at the Hard Rock Hostel, which was an unimaginative, shoddy rip-off of a much more prestigious chain. Among my favourites were Selene and Floor, a couple of Dutch girls and Phillip, a striking German guy - even if his name wasn't so. I definitely had a man crush on Phillip, he was a really good-looking guy who wasn't aware of just how gorgeous he was; at six feet even he had an attractive five inches over me in height. His dirty blond hair verged on a colour some might say was strawberry; with those cool blue eyes of his, Phillip definitely wasn't hard to look at. He was a second year Sociology student in Copenhagen, which I liked to think might mean he was gay - but I couldn't be quite sure.
