We were all trying our best. Our newly supplied uniforms have been washed and ironed carefully. They were neatly laid out on our beds, ready for inspection. For we knew that the inspector could arrive any moment.
We didn't know what to expect from him. What we did know, was that the first rules of inspection had to be obeyed: (1) Always keep your uniform as clean as possible; (2) Pay special attention to your patrol boots, insides included; (3) Keep your body healthy, especially your feet; (4) Never entrust somebody else with your uniform. The weird thing was - we were not allowed to take of our patrol boots while we were polishing them. After 13 hours of extensive orientation, my feet were aching to get out of the stiff leather. But I still had to spit shine the shafts. I wanted to escape and go home, but I knew that the electrical fences in the middle of this desert were alive. The government was serious about our training.
